Billy Gean Sutherland Sr., a retired airplane inspector from NAS Jax, passed away on August 20, 2020 at the age of 84 after suffering a stroke. Billy is survived by his children Lisa Gail Sutherland Houston (son-in-law, Charlie Houston), Billy Gean Sutherland, Jr., and Sherry Lynn Sutherland-Choy (son-in-law, Dean Choy) and his grandchildren, Austin Tyler Sutherland, Hayley Brooke Sutherland, Christopher Tyler Choy, and Cara Adina Choy. He is preceded in death by his fiancée, Brenda Diane Thomas, and his two daughters, Delores Jean Sutherland and Wanda Sue Sutherland. Billy was born in Bee, Virginia on September 15, 1935 and raised in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky. When he was 17 years old, he joined the Marine Corps. He was stationed in Japan during the late 1950’s and traveled to the various countries of Greenland, Spain, and Portugal as an airplane inspector. Billy was a devoted airplane inspector with a remarkable work ethic. He received numerous awards for outstanding job performance and pride in his craftsmanship. Billy was honored with a plaque of recognition for never missing a day of work in twenty-five years. Billy was a stoic man of great generosity, high integrity, and fortitude. He constantly strived to do the right thing by others, particularly his children. Billy was a wonderful provider to his family and dedicated father. He loved animals and being in the mountains. He enjoyed collecting coins, taking road trips, and listening to country music. Billy attended weekly Sunday service at Trinity Baptist Church. Billy was dearly loved by his friends, family and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, August 26th, from 6-8 pm at Fraser Funeral Home and a Memorial service will be conducted at Riverside Memorial Park on Thursday, August 27th, at 1 pm. I have known Mr. Sutherland almost my entire life. He is both of my best friend’s dad. He was always so nice, especially putting up with us Knuckleheads like he did when we were Young. I’ve always had great respect for him, he is a wonderful father from everything I’ve seen over the yearsm. He will be greatly missed. Lisa you and your family are always in my prayers! I love you all! I hope you find comfort in knowing what a wonderful man your dad was.
