Caroline Kicklighter Long

January 29, 1942~August 23, 2020

Caroline Long, 78, of Jacksonville, passed away during the morning of August 23, 2020, peacefully in her sleep.
She was born to the late Cyril and Rosamond Kicklighter of Richmond Hill, Georgia, on January 29, 1942. She attended and completed high school in her home town where she excelled in academics and girls’ basketball all while working in the family businesses. She briefly continued her education at North Georgia College in Dahlonega before returning home to help with the family businesses.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Long, of Jacksonville, Florida. After their marriage in November of 1961 they moved to Jacksonville, Florida where they would start a wonderful life and family.
Caroline is survived by her two sons, Scott and his wife, Lynne and John and his wife, Rhonda as well as her 3 grandchildren, Eric, Clayton and Destiny.
Caroline is also survived by her siblings, Becky Fortner, Kathy Brock and Tony Kicklighter as well as their spouses and a host of nieces and nephews.
Caroline was very proud and dedicated to her family. Many years of weekends and evenings were spent devoted to Little League and church softball where she was team mother, worked in concession stands, coached or was just the lead cheerleader behind the backstop. Caroline also had an immense passion for plants and animals which guided her down numerous paths of accomplishments. From the backyard greenhouse business “Long’s Fernery” to her starting the Northeast Florida Fern Society, which eventually led to her position of “horticultural director” with the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair, she was destined to be a successful business owner. In April of 1989, she purchased the retail division of the Feed and Seed Center on St Augustine Rd and from this built, “Feed Feather and Farm Supply”, which she operated with her two sons and husband for eleven years until her health started to decline. It was here that she was center stage with her abilities and knowledge and touched the lives of many people and critters of all kinds.
Caroline’s viewing ceremony will be held Thursday, August 27, 2020, from 6 to 8 pm and services will be held Friday, August 28, 2020 at 10am. Both events will be at Fraser Funeral Home, 8168 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32221. The burial will immediately follow the service on Friday at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.

Caroline directed my wedding at Cedar Creek Baptist Church and turned the stage into a botanical garden full of her beautiful ferns. She also coached my sisters and I on the ladies church softball team. My family and hers go way back to our youth group at CCBC. A lot of fun memories, too many to share! Sad for the family’s loss, but grateful she knew the Lord and is now with Him. Praying for comfort and peace through this time.
