Donald Roger Sass (Grandpa), 86, of Jacksonville Florida, passed away unexpectedly on July 7th, 2024.
Donald was born in Detroit Michigan on July 2nd, 1938, to Edward and Louise Sass. After graduating from High School of Commerce in 1956, he worked at the local grocery and later went on to join the United States Navy in 1962. In 1964, Donald met Judy Burgess while attending Trinity Baptist Church. Don and Judy married July 25th, 1967, and went on to have two children, Douglas & Laurel Sass.
After the Navy, Don worked as a bank clerk for the Atlantic National Bank of Jacksonville. In 1974, with only a high school diploma, Don started the Food Service at Trinity Christian Academy and subsequently managed the foodservice of Trinity Baptist College until 2010. Don simultaneously managed the Conquerors Christian Bookstore from 1972 until 1988.
Don was a master of many hobbies including gardening, fish keeping, aviary, model trains, lighthouses, computers, and even raising worms.
In 2017, Donald retired for the third time and spent his time preparing food for kids at the Trinity Youth Camp and loving his grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of his greatest achievements was being everything to everyone and he was affectionately known as “Grandpa” to all who knew him.
Donald was predeceased by his wife Judy. He is survived by His sister Judy Bolter, son Doug (Angie) Sass, daughter Laurel (James) Groff, and his Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren Don & Judy had six grandchildren Autumn Hudson, Amber (Kyle) Thorpe, Andrew (Payton) Sass, Jordan (John) Kelly, Caleb (Gracie) Groff, Makenzie Groff as well as six Great Grandchildren, Kyson Hudson, Keller Hudson, Forest Hudson, Allie Thorpe, Audrey Thorpe, Atlas Thorpe, Harrison Kelly, Merritt Kelly, and Lily Anastasia Sass.
A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity Baptist Church on July 13, 2024, at 3:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Trinity Camp & Retreat Center, a ministry Don, Judy & Laurel served selflessly throughout their lives.
