James Ronald Silcox, Sr., 74, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on October 18, 1950, James lived a life full of heart, humor, and unforgettable flavor—especially when it came to his famous smoked ribs, sweet tea, homemade spaghetti, and his well-known sweet tooth.
James was a man of simple pleasures and deep loyalty. He never missed his favorite soap operas and was a faithful fan of classic TV. He loved nothing more than settling in for episodes of Walker, Texas Ranger, Matlock, and In the Heat of the Night, rooting for the good guys and solving mysteries right alongside them. Whether it was a quiet afternoon in front of the TV or a weekend with family, James found joy in the little things and shared it freely with those around him.
He had a special kind of pride for his red 2003 Ford F-150, which he kept looking sharp and running smooth. That truck wasn’t just transportation—it was part of who he was. Whether cruising to the store, heading to a family get together or just taking a drive, he loved being behind the wheel of that pickup. Now, his son Jimmy will carry on the tradition, keeping the truck rolling and the memories alive with every mile.
James was also a dedicated and hardworking man. Following his time in the military, James worked at Rex Packaging from 1982 until his retirement in 2014. He was known not only for his strong work ethic but for the friendships he built over the years. His coworkers became like family, and he took great pride in every role he held during his long career. No matter how large or small the task, he completed each with pride and a smile.
When it came to food, James had a gift for making people smile—both with his cooking and his cravings. His smoked ribs were legendary, his spaghetti was soul-soothing, and his sweet tea never missed the mark—though, we’d all agree it could occasionally use a little more sugar. When it came time for dessert, James never passed up a scoop of ice cream, an oatmeal cream pie, or a Little Debbie birthday cake or Christmas Tree. He believed in enjoying life fully, especially when it came with a little sweetness.
James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Minnie Lee and Fred Silcox; his brother, William Silcox; and his dear sisters Debbie Silcox, Linda Zehler, and Sue Edwards. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life, and now they are joyfully reunited.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Silcox; and his nine children: April Sawyer (James), Lee Glover (Celeste), Dawn Silcox, Jimmy Silcox (Kim), Laura Starling (Billy), Brooke Schumacher (James), Thomas Metcalf (Amanda), Joann Metcalf, and William Metcalf. He also leaves behind many grandchildren, one great-grandchild, extended family, and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Visitation and viewing will be held at Fraser Funeral Home on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Fraser Funeral Home. Interment will take place afterward at Gethsemane Memorial Garden.
All who knew and loved James are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of a man who made the world a little brighter—and a whole lot tastier.
Rest easy, we’ll keep the smoker going, the sweet tea cold (maybe just a bit sweeter), the spaghetti hot, and always save room for dessert in your honor. Also, just like you would’ve wanted, we promise to rarely turn the thermostat below 78 degrees and make sure every light in the house is off each night.
He will be dearly missed and forever cherished in the memories we’ve shared.
