James Virgil Morgan (Jimmy), age 87, passed away peacefully at home on November 2, 2023, then went to heaven, his eternal home. During his final weeks on earth, he was always with his earthly family as he was loved and cared for by each one.
Virgil was born in Mayo, Florida on January 4, 1936, and grew up in Live Oak, Florida. He was born again in 1962 and continued to love the Lord the remainder of his life sharing his faith through service and prayer. He was adamant regarding his duty to his country and served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1953 to 1956.
After leaving the military, Virgil came to Jacksonville where he attended a refrigeration trade school. During that time, he met his wife, Lucretia of almost 63 years. He worked with Winn-Dixie for 38 years holding various positions, retiring as a refrigeration supervisor.
Virgil loved his Savior, family and country. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. He really loved to sing praises to his Father in church and at home before his voice began to fade. He was a nature lover and found tranquility in the outdoors, mountain views, and while at home. He especially enjoyed watching the many bird species arriving to enjoy the bounty of food he provided. He was known for his green thumb, caring for plants and providing gardening advice to the next generations.
Family was one of Virgil’s greatest joys. He loved spending time with his children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some of his favorite pastimes were gathering with loved ones, whether they be his siblings, extended family or church family; creating memories over a meal, around the pool, grilling, and on vacations. During fishing trips with family, he would share fishing techniques and boating advice. He was always willing to provide his knowledge to anyone.
Virgil was a Master Mason since 1966 and a member of Duval and Hyde Park Lodges. In addition, he was a Gideon for many years passing out Bibles to school kids and provide them to hotel rooms. Whether on vacation, in hospital rooms, or nursing home visits he would always check to ensure a Bible was available. He was a member of Westside Baptist church in Jacksonville, Florida.
Everyone who knew him would say he was a “GOOD” man. Psalm 112:5.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents Wilber Oglesby Morgan and Johnee Thomas Morgan, two brothers Bronzell Morgan and Thomas Evan Morgan and a sister Barbara Watson.
He is survived by his wife, Lucretia, his son Jimmy Morgan (Jody), his daughters Nena Alto (Alan), Yvonne Morris (Kevin), and a sister Sheryl LeDale Starling (James), his grandchildren April Morgan (Devin Scott), Jonathan Morgan (Amanda), Alexander Alto and Kevin Morris, Jr. (Leslie). He also has 5 great grandchildren.
