Shàntell L. Laguna “Shàn” (1969 – 2024), 55 years old.
Shàn was born in Beaumont, TX on July 25, 1969. She passed away in Jacksonville, FL on December 21, 2024, where she spent most of her life. She is preceded in death by her grandmother Rita B. Laguna and her beloved and faithful fur baby Mija, her fluffy fat cat. She is survived by her mother Victoria (Louis) Baker, her sisters Michelle Romedy and Paula (Jim) Freeman, and a host of beloved uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Shàn had a deep love for her family and friends. She was always looking out for them in some way or another. She often showed her love in many ways, sometimes by being overly bossy. But, despite that, she showed fierce love for you. She was always known to tell those close to her, “Me love you long time”.
Shàn worked for Urban Jacksonville for 13 years as a Supervisor and Coordinator of the Meals on Wheels program. The last 12 years she has been a proud employee of the Jacksonville Transit Authority as a Ticket Revenue Cashier, but she was so much more than that. She had a soft spot in her heart for her senior customers and always took extra care with them.
She had a love for riding her motorcycle, which she named “Freedom”. She always said there was nothing like the wind and sunshine on your face to make you feel a sense of absolute freedom. Shàn had a green thumb and loved to grow her plants into lush greenery with such pride. She loved butterflies of all shapes and colors and they had so many different meanings for her. They symbolized hope, transformation, freedom and that the human soul can one day fly free. Butterflies are also thought to represent the souls of the departed, visiting loved ones to offer comfort and guidance. So always remember that last tidbit of Shàn when a butterfly is nearby.
Shàntell’s Memorial Service will be held at 11am on January 25, 2025 at Fraser Funeral Home, 8168 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32221. Since Shàn loved the color purple, we ask that everyone wear purple and flood the seats of her service as we celebrate her life and our last “see you later”.

Shan demonstrated deep respect for others. She called me several times (for advice) over the last year or so but did not disclose her illness. She proudly told me she was happy I was part of her life during her formative years. Shan was a magnet for others who shared her interests and optimism
