I don’t remember the first time I met Grandpa Bill. That’s usually the case when you meet someone for the very first time that you really, really like. He had my dad’s name, a firm handshake, penetrating eyes and he liked to eat. Did I mention that he liked to eat. I do remember the food, lots of food, lots of really good home cooked dishes and casseroles and pies and cake. Oh my! And you could have as much as you wanted and we did. We would usually have two heaping plates full but his brother Ted was the bottomless pit and always out did us with three. Bev and I got to share an afternoon with him one Sunday. It was Memorial Day weekend and Bev had on her bright fire engine red dress. She also wore her red hat, the one with the veil. He was mesmerized by the veil and the red, white and blue lapel flag pin she had on. He was quite a man and every time I hear or see a fire engine I will think of him.

So sad to learn of Bill’s passing. I worked with him from time to time while with the City of Jacksonville.
