Donald Joseph Barnes

December 20, 1965~August 09, 2021

Donald Joseph Barnes passed away Monday, August 9, 2021. Joe was born December 20, 1965 to Donald and Francine Barnes.

At an early age, Joe became interested in electronics – ham radio in particular. He was featured in a local newspaper at the age of 17 as he made contact with the Space Shuttle, much to his family’s surprise. During the last two years of his life, Joe participated in ‘The Santa Net’, relaying the voice of Santa to children over ham radio, creating a memorable experience for children and their families across the United States. Joe had a great love and gentle heart for animals, and he would go out of his way to feed homeless animals when they crossed his path.

Joe began his first responder career at Liberty Ambulance, and later became employed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Joe retired from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s office after 24 years of service, and later became employed with FSCJ as an Armed Security Officer, where he was employed until his passing.

Anyone who knew Joe was drawn to him for his quick wit, his infectious laugh, and his incredibly generous spirit.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Tammy, and stepchildren James T. Dees Jr., (Sharmy) and Jonathan E. Dees. Joe has 4 grandchildren, Savannah, Eldan, Blake, and Logan. Joe is also survived by his father, Donald Barnes, his sisters Kathy Messick (Chester), Laura Hicks (Stephen), nieces Lauren, and Lizzy, and his nephew Jesse. Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Francine Barnes.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, 08/13/21, at Old Plank Baptist Church, 8964 Old Plank Road, Jacksonville Fl. Visitation will begin at 10:00AM, with the funeral service following at 11:00. A graveside service will follow immediately at Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park, FL 32073.

How looked after me like I was one of his own. He cared for my customers and students and the day he transferred from South was a hard day for me. This loss makes me feel a little emptier. He was my buddy. I am saddened by his passing and he will be forever my friend in my heart.

‘But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.’ (Romans 76)
