E.R. ‘Bud’ Beck

November 14, 1931~September 15, 2020

Elwood R. “Bud” Beck November 14, 1931 – September 15, 2020 He was born in Archbold, Ohio to Elden and Thelma Beck. Survived by his wife of 67 years, Vastie “Bobbie” Beck, his daughter, Rhonda (Keith) Cato, his son, R. Dale (Kim) Beck, a brother, Lyn Beck, three sisters; Jane Miller, Julia Boyd and Teri Huff, five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughters; Debra Lark Beck and Donna Beck Williamson, a sister, Alice Jordan. Bud passed away early Tuesday morning after years of enduring a long-time illness. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged as a disabled Veteran. He was a long-time member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and loved serving and sharing the Lord our Savior with others. Bud never met a stranger and became a friend to most. Many people knew him by the name of Bud, but once they got to know him well, it translated to “Bug” or “Uncle Bug” because of his love of pestering. His lifetime hobbies include fishing, carpentry, softball, singing gospel, and of course, teasing everyone. He stood strong for what is right through God’s word. Although he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, we rest assured knowing that he is in Heaven with our Savior as well as his two girls who went before him. The family will accept visitors at Fraser Funeral Home on Sunday with the family time being 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm and other guests 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Services will be held at Cedar Creek Baptist Church, 1372 Lane Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32205 on Monday, September 21, 2020 at 11:00 am with Dr. John Montgomery officiating. Bud will be interred in The National Cemetery in Jacksonville as a U.S. Navy Disabled Veteran. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to Cedar Creek Baptist Church in “Bud’s” honor. The pall bearers chosen by Bud are grandsons Justin Cato, Josh Sands, Marshall West, Jeremy Risher, Andy Williamson (son-in-law), and David Howard and will be led by Keith Cato. Honorary pall bearers, which were also chosen by Bud, will be great-grandsons Logan and Nathan Cato; Tuf, Tate, and Tifton Sands; and Beckham West. The family will be led by R. Dale Beck.

I miss my Granddaddy Beck so much, just like I know everyone in his family and circle of friends do! So many memories I have of him, it would take a Long time to list them all! Though it may have looked or sounded as if I wasn’t interested in hearing his stories, while we, ( My parents and I.) were on the road with him and my grandmother, to wherever we were heading. But whenever I put down the book I was reading, or took the headphones off, it wasn’t because I was bored from either, but because he was about to tell a story, rather it was I heard before or one I’ve not heard at all. I remember a few times someone in the family would say,. “Dad, granddaddy, or Bud” you told this one before, but that didn’t stop him or stop someone else in the family to remind us that it’s fine and for us to treasure these times, because granddaddy enjoyed telling us stories of his youth. There was this one time he was telling us kids and grandkids about something he and grandmother did, and grandmother would jump in and say something like, “that’s not how I remember it.” And he’d look at her and say, well Bobbie who’s telling the story you or me?” Or something like “Feel free to take over anytime.” I miss him, I miss his stories, and I miss his picking ons. He was also one of very few, who would sit and actually listen to me when I wanted to say something or had something to say, no matter how long it took me to say it. My granddaddy is one of the main reasons why I developed a liking for story telling and expressing oneself, and taking the time to sit and listen to others when they want or need or have something to say.
