Helen Metts Saffer, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,
departed this earth for her home in Heaven on Thursday, November 16,
2023. She has reunited with her son, Duane Allen Saffer; her mother,
Woodie Ann Roberts: her father, Felton Metts; her sister, Betty Ann
Mongeon; and brothers, Johnnie Metts and Joe Donald Metts. She leaves
behind daughters, Deborah Searcy and Toni Lewis (Clay), along with son
Tommy Saffer; grandchildren, Trey Lewis, Justin Lewis, Loren Ward
(Shane), Austin Saffer (Val), Alexis Saffer, and Katelyn Funchess (Jimmy);
six great-grandchildren, and a multitude of other family and close friends.
Helen attended Andrew Jackson High School. She was a member of
Westside Baptist Church; however, she devoted many years actively
serving at Calvary Baptist Church while raising her four children.
Helen retired from Sears and then spent her time with her grandchildren.
She loved gardening and sewing. Her family and friends will remember her
for her cooking, her commitment to serving her family as caregiver to
relatives and friends, and her love of NASCAR.
Services honoring Helen will be Tuesday, November 21, 2023, in the
Teachey Chapel at Westside Baptist Church, 7775 Herlong Road,
Jacksonville, Florida, 32210. Visitation for friends and family will be at
10:00 am with Services starting at 11:00 am. A luncheon will be held
immediately after in the church fellowship hall. Burial is scheduled for 2:30
pm at Evergreen Cemetery (no processional). Details and directions will be
available at the church for all who would like to attend. The 11 o’clock
service will be streamed online at wbcjax.com.
