In the afternoon of August 14, 2022, Michael Michener Jr. suddenly passed away at St. Vincent’s Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville, Fl. Mike was 56 years old. Mike was born in Prince Georges, Maryland on April 8, 1966. He was the first child and only son to Michael and Connie Michener. He graduated from Ed White High School in May 1984 and the Florida Community College of Jacksonville in July 1988.

Michael Michener served 30 years as a police officer for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office; 27 of those years as a dual-purpose canine handler/trainer for special weapons and tactic teams. He served as the units lead trainer and was responsible for twenty dual canine teams as well as assisting several additional state and federal canine units. Acquiring his first German PsP title as a certified handler in 1995, Mike ascended rank structure of the program reaching the level of PsP Judge in 2005. Holding titles in Patrol, Explosives/Narcotics and SRT tactics (DH,DPO,PSP,WPO), Mike has been recommended by the Department of Justice for his constitutionally conservative training techniques. He is considered an expert witness in the fourth judicial circuit and has testified on the behalf of several agencies. He retired from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office after 33 years of service in 2017.

He enjoyed fishing and scuba diving, traveling the country, and spending time with his family and dogs. He was known by many for his impressive work ethic, his wry sense of humor, and his strong Christian values.

Michael is proceeded in death by his father Michael Sr. (Dawn), and his uncle, Charles Dorsey. He is survived by his wife Cathy, daughter Michaela (Daniel), his mother Connie, his sister Michele, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be on Friday, August 19, 2022, at 10:00AM in Westside Baptist Church, 7775 Herlong Road, Jacksonville, FL 32210 with Dr. Keith Russell officiating followed by interment in Riverside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
