It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, Freddie Nell Shugrue. (Fred, Frederia, Grammy, GMa, Grandma, Mom, Mommaaaaa)
Freddie, age 72, of Jacksonville, FL was born in Valdosta, GA on May 10, 1953. A daughter of the late Fred and Waunell Graham. She was big sister to the late Freda Flores. She passed away peacefully in the arms of her granddaughter, Storm and surrounded by family, Christa, Hailey, Rain and Veronica.
She is survived by two daughters, Christa and Hailey Shugrue, two granddaughters, Rain Brigman and Storm Velez (Franklin), and her ever faithful chihuahua, Yoda. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will miss her greatly.
Two of Freddie’s greatest joys in life were her granddaughters. She thought it was ironic that in May of 1993 she turned 40, became a grandma and got divorced all in a matter of a few days. Storm was her pride and joy until 1997 when Rain came along. Those two children could do nothing wrong in her eyes! She loved them with everything in her and was so proud of all their accomplishments. She loved to watch them play sports and displayed every piece of art they ever brought home. If you knew Freddie, you heard of Storm and Rain…she told anyone that would listen all about them.
In 2018 when she got her beloved Yoda, her world was complete. Freddie and that dog were birds of a feather. He went where she went, including the movies for the longest time. She took him on car rides to nowhere and fed him like a King! We believe animals mourn the loss of their person and Yoda is definitely missing his mom.
In 2022 when she moved in with Christa and Hailey, she finally got her dream pond. She was so proud of her pond, and she showed everyone that came to the house, including most recently, her physical therapist and home nurse. She and Yoda kept those fish in line and now Yoda is continuing the tradition with Hailey.
For years, after she took a trip to Alaska with friends, she dreamed of going back and this time, taking Storm and Rain. The trip was all planned and almost paid for in 2020, but Covid had other ideas. The dream was derailed until 2024 when that dream finally became a reality. The 15-day trip was long and exhausting for Freddie, but she would do it again if she could. She was so excited to share her stories from her previous trip with her precious grandkids.
In 2025 another dream came true. She finally got to buy Storm a wedding dress. Something she’d been waiting 32 years to do. She was so delighted to be at Storm and Franklin’s wedding!
Her last big adventure came just recently when her niece Erica and her boyfriend Mark came to visit in November. Freddie got to go fishing for basically an entire day and didn’t catch a thing (except a hard time from Christa) but she enjoyed every minute of it. She loved fishing and rarely got the chance. She thought Mark hung the moon when he took her fishing again the next day right by himself.
Freddie loved camping with Tina and visiting the Fenders in Stockton. She looked forward to her annual Epworth trip with her friends. She took great pleasure in gardening, watching Storm and Rain play sports, and traveling with friends and family. She relished herself in all arts and crafts, particularly painting and thoroughly enjoyed hosting her friends at home for craft days. She liked bird watching and she loved playing cards with Sue, Risa and Susan and playing other games with anyone that would play. And if you weren’t careful, just when you thought you were winning, she’d kick your ass.
Freddie was heavily involved with Al-Anon and her heart was so full of love for it and the people she met there. They are like a whole separate family, and she cherished her relationship with every one of them. If she told us once, she told us a thousand times, to repeat the serenity prayer any time we were in a tough spot, and it would help us through. It provides solace for dealing with life’s difficulties by focusing on acceptance, action and discernment.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”.
Freddie had a big heart! She was always up for an adventure, and she cherished the time she spent with friends and family. She was funny but could be mean as a rattlesnake too. She might not give you the shirt off her back, but she would buy you a shirt. She was caring and giving almost to a fault.
Freddie’s final wish was for Storm and Rain to have her buried or cremated based on their needs for closure. They have chosen to have her cremated by Fraser Funeral Home.
Christa, Hailey, Storm and Rain will host friends and family at an open house Celebration of Life at their home on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the following times:
Friends: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Family: 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
