Russell Lawrence Johnson, born December 3,1946, in Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 19, 2025, at the age of 78. A man of courage, wisdom, and warmth.
Russell leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family and community.
Russell was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mabel L. Powell and Carlton M. Johnson.
He is survived by his devoted girlfriend of 22 years, Ginger Casanova; his two sisters, Bobbie Ann Simmons and Gale Lynn Dollar; and his brother, Alan Jay Johnson. He is also survived by his three children, Leigh Kathleen Hanson, Shawnee Poppyee Reese, and Joshua Russell Johnson; eight cherished grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A proud veteran, Russell was drafted into the United States Army in 1966 and served honorably in the 25th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. His service shaped his resilience and deepened his appreciation for life’s simple joys.
Russell had a passion for music of many genres and for philosophy, often engaging in thoughtful discussions that reflected his curious and introspective nature. He found solace in fishing, casting lines into tranquil waters, and treasured moments spent with his grandchildren, sharing stories and creating lasting memories.
Russell’s kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew him.
